Xenakis’ masterpiece EONTA was conceived after seeing Noh in Kyoto shortly after his first visit to Japan in 1961, and premiered in Paris in 1964 under the direction of Pierre Boulez.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of its first performance, with a new production by Toshifumi Tanaka, Noh performer and holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Asset.
The brass part, which is as difficult as the piano part, will be performed by top Japanese players, including Atsushi Takahashi. The conductor will be Shun Ooi, who is currently the most remarkable conductor in Japan.
In addition, Mr Xenakis’ most trusted pianist, Hiroaki Ooi, the only pianist to have performed all of his keyboard works and concertos, will accompany EONTA in a series of five solo piano pieces.
Such ambitious programming was not possible even on the centenary of Xenakis’ birth in 2022, and is unique in the world.
